BOULDER FIELD TELEMETRY FACILITY

About Camp Rocky Road: Empirical Engineering for the Backcountry

Camp Rocky Road is an independent mechanical and electrical testing publication founded to bring verifiable physics, sensor telemetry, and engineering rigor to overland vehicle builds and wilderness survival systems.

Our Boulder, Colorado Field Testing Facility

Headquartered at 2850 Baseline Rd, Suite 210, Boulder, CO 80303, our facility sits at the doorstep of the Front Range of the Rocky Mountains at an elevation of 5,430 feet. This unique geographical proving ground provides immediate year-round access to extreme operating conditions: high-altitude alpine cold (-15°F winter storms above 11,000 feet), high ultraviolet solar irradiance in the high-desert basins of western Colorado and Utah, and punishing high-frequency corrugations on unmaintained Forest Service tracks.

Unlike digital media outlets that aggregate manufacturer press releases, every technical specification published by Camp Rocky Road is verified through our in-house test bench. Our instrumentation lab utilizes industrial-grade hardware, including:

  • Yokogawa WT310E & Fluke 289 True-RMS Power Analyzers: Measuring precise quiescent tare power, pure sine wave harmonic distortion, and millivolt-level DC voltage drop across high-current chassis cabling.
  • Thermal Environmental Simulation Chamber: Testing 12V portable compressor fridges, sleeping pad ASTM F3340-18 R-values, and LiFePO4 battery low-temperature charging cutoffs across controlled temperatures from -10°F to 110°F (-23°C to 43°C).
  • Straightpoint Wireless 25-Ton Telemetry Load Cells: Capturing real-time dynamic impact peaks (G-forces) during vehicle kinetic rope recoveries and winch rigging cycles.
  • Kestrel 5500 Weather Stations & Soil Penetrometers: Measuring wind velocity vectors, aerodynamic shelter uplift, and ground stake shear cone mechanics during 50 mph alpine wind events.
100% SPONSOR-FREE EDITORIAL CHARTER

Zero Free Gear. Zero Sponsored Placements.

The outdoor gear industry is deeply compromised by paid influencer relationships, brand ambassadorships, and affiliate roundups where high commissions dictate review rankings. When structural components—such as rooftop tent mounting brackets, vehicle recovery kinetic ropes, or winter stove chimney flashings—are evaluated on marketing promises rather than structural engineering, vehicle occupants are placed at grave physical risk.

Camp Rocky Road adheres to a strict editorial policy: We do not accept free product samples from manufacturers, we do not produce sponsored content, and we do not participate in paid brand partnerships. All hardware tested in our Boulder facility is purchased directly off retail shelves using our independent editorial budget. We monetize solely through unobtrusive, contextual programmatic advertising (including Google AdSense).
